Wonder is so concerned with feeling вЂњbiggerвЂќ than ShawnвЂ™s previous albums that it lacks the attention to detail that truly makes an album great. There is absolutely no need, nor is there a use, for an album intro that does not properly blend into the first full-length track, at the very least. Honestly, the writing was on the wall from the intro. Twinkling piano and a tender vocal mark a brief вЂњIntroвЂќ that leads into the title track, which still sounds just as good as it did when it dropped a few weeks ago. ItвЂ™s almost funny that Wonder spends the majority of its time exploring the newfound love Shawn has apparently been introduced to by Camila, and yet, the central question of the lead single is вЂњI wonder what itвЂ™s like to be loved by you?вЂќ What makes Wonder incredibly frustrating is how strong the album starts off. Wonder is populated by love songs inspired by Camila Cabello that entirely rely on clichГ© and canвЂ™t help themselves from being boring.

The songwriting is mind-numbingly repetitive and ridiculously vapid, the sequencing of the album is nothing short of a disaster, the production is entirely too noisy and just plain baffling, and the theme seems to be non-existent. There are almost too many issues with Wonder to list. Shawn has production credits on 12 out of the 14 tracks on the album, and thatвЂ™s about as many songs that inexplicably transform into brassy synth breakdowns at any given moment. ItвЂ™s unclear if the song has put Shawn under some kind of spell (possibly a curse), but he spends most of Wonder trying to recreate the magic of вЂњCanвЂ™t Take My Eyes Off Of You.вЂќ He even included a live cover of the song on one of the two deluxe editions of the album released in the middle of the tracking week in the face of startlingly low sales predictions. Early in the documentary, thereвЂ™s a scene where Shawn is in a car listening to Frankie Valli & The Four SeasonsвЂ™ вЂњCanвЂ™t Take My Eyes Off Of You.вЂќ HeвЂ™s absolutely enamored with the trackвЂ™s robust instrumentation and horn arrangements. Somehow, these brilliant minds couldnвЂ™t have come up with more than two good songs on the fourteen song album. For Wonder, Shawn recruited Ricky Reed ( LizzoвЂ™s вЂњTempoвЂќ and вЂњJuiceвЂќ), Kid Harpoon ( Harry StylesвЂ вЂњAdore YouвЂќ and вЂњFallingвЂќ), Scott Harris (ShawnвЂ™s вЂњIn My BloodвЂќ and вЂњIf I CanвЂ™t Have YouвЂќ) and more. The remarkably actionless doc should have been a warning for this remarkably boring record.
